Futur-IA: Archer Aviation and Soracle: A new era for flying taxis in Japan

Japan is quickly establishing itself as a key hub for eVTOL and air taxi technology. This morning, Archer Aviation, a leading developer of sustainable aviation, announced its partnership with Soracle Corporation, taking another step towards establishing an air taxi service in the country. Soracle has indeed just acquired up to 100 Midnight eVTOL aircraft.

Rapid Adoption of Air Taxis in Japan

Although Japan has lagged behind in adopting fully electric vehicles, the country now appears ready to fully embrace the idea of air taxi networks using vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft. In 2021, the Osaka Roundtable announced a partnership with the German company Volocopter to develop strategies for implementing these networks.

Companies like SkyDrive are collaborating with Japanese manufacturers like Suzuki to manufacture eVTOL aircraft overseas. These initiatives also benefit from government funding to continue the development of advanced air mobility (AAM).

Concrete Progress in Electric Aviation

Recently, Joby Aviation conducted its first eVTOL test flight in Japan in the presence of executives from Toyota, one of its main investors. Today, Archer Aviation is making the jump to join its competitors in Asia and already has one customer, Soracle, planning a potential massive eVTOL order.

Soracle’s Ambitions for Air Mobility

Soracle aims to launch AAM operations in Japan using Archer’s eVTOL aircraft. These air taxis will offer fully electric flights in areas where ground transportation is often slowed by traffic or geographic barriers. The potential order of 100 Midnight aircraft is estimated at approximately 500 million dollarsaccompanied by advance payments linked to specific milestones before aircraft delivery.

Yukihiro Ota, the CEO of Soracle, expressed his thoughts during the signing ceremony which took place on September 26, 2024: “Through the operation of eVTOL aircraft, Soracle aims to enrich lives and society by making air transportation services more accessible in Japan. We will provide safe and reliable services to passengers by leveraging the expertise we have gained with Japan Airlines and Sumitomo Corporation.”

An Air Taxi Network Across Japan

To support its future Midnight eVTOL fleet, Soracle plans to develop a network of air taxi flight routes in attractive areas. This will allow not only residents, but also domestic and international visitors, to travel across Japan more quickly. Potential cities for these routes include:

  • Tokyo
  • Osaka
  • Nagoya
  • Hokkaido
  • Setouchi
  • Okinawa

A Public Demonstration at the World Expo

To lay the groundwork for the commercialization of AAM and air taxi services in Japan, Archer and Soracle plan to conduct a public flight demonstration at the World Expo, which will take place in Osaka, Kansai, from April to October 2025. This event represents a unique opportunity to generate public enthusiasm, present this future technology and stimulate investments from stakeholders.

A Growing International Network

With this announcement, Archer Aviation adds Soracle and Japan to its growing list of customers and partners worldwide. This list already includes major players such as Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, KaKaoMobility in Korea and the United Arab Emirates.

This partnership symbolizes not only an advancement for Archer, but also a significant turning point for air mobility in Japan, promising a future where air taxis become an everyday reality.
